About Custom Computers

If you are thinking about getting a new computer to replace an outdated one, we can help! We can build you a computer out of the components. You get to pick everything that goes into your system, or tell us what you would like to do with your new system and we'll build you something that will meet your needs today as well as have plenty of room for upgrading in the future.

Why not Dell?

You might be thinking, "Why not get a Dell instead? Or a Gateway, or Compaq, or HP, or E-Machines, etc?" There are several reasons.

First, there are the components. Why can you get a complete system from Dell or other original equipment manufacturers (or OEMs) as they're called for as little as $500? Because they use cheap parts, and they skimp on expensive ones. You might get a complete system from an OEM for $500, but the processor, which may have a fast clock speed, will likely be a Celeron rather than a Pentium, the RAM will be low (256 MB) and may also be a slow speed. Bus speed (very important) could be slower, the hard drive which may seem to be large in gigabytes will likely have a small cache and low RPM, making it slower; it may even slow down the rest of the system. The video card will probably be soemthing low-end that sounds high-end. Components like CD/DVD writers are promoted as cutting-edge features, when in reality the prices for those drives has plummeted, and the cheaper ones they use tend to be noisy and less reliable. The power supplies for these systems are especially cheap and faulty which is a possible fire hazard. A system from an OEM is also not easily upgradeable. They don't want you to add new components; they want you to buy new systems.

The second major reason is support. What happens if something goes wrong with your system? Well, it depends on what happens. The first thing you will likely do is call your OEM, and get connected to someone in a foreign country. This person is usually not trained very well on the systems they are supporting, and may not speak English very well. If you are lucky enough to get back to someone in the US after you've spent a lot of time rebooting your system or doing other obvious things, you may find that your problem cannot be solved over the phone. Usually you're faced with a few options. The first option is to use the restore CD the OEM gave you with the system. This lovely CD will erase everything on your system, and restore it to the state it was in when you got it. Of course all of your files and settings you've had since then will be gone. Your other option is probably to send it in to them, where they will perform the service of erasing everything on your behalf, and you get to wait days or weeks for it. An OEM will not work to save your existing files and settings.

Components

Unless specifically requested, we will use high quality components in all of the systems we build. Unless you choose to skip it, we will perform extensive tests on all components. Components can be chosen by you, or by us. We're very flexible. You can choose just the right case to go with your living area, or get a generic case, for example. Everything is made to your specifications. Most parts are ordered from distributors as needed to keep costs down.

Support

All of our systems come with support for one year, with the option of purchasing more support. Support includes a monthly system checkup as well as support for any problem related to our building of the system. We will look at problems to determine if the problem is covered by us, and if not, you can have us fix it at a discounted rate. We will never reformat your system to fix a problem that does not warrant it (and most problems do not). If a reformat is necessary, back-ups of your important files are made first, so that you do not lose anything important. For more details, please contact us.
